Why have over 450,000 people studied Seven Steps?

If you’re a pastor like me, you’ve probably struggled to make your core group bigger. You know the ones: they never miss a Sunday, they tithe, volunteer, and invite others to church.

They truly understand their biblical responsibilities.

Unfortunately, many of your members are on the edges, barely involved. If you could just get them committed, your church could be more of a force in your community.

I’ve been there. I encouraged my people to attend, volunteer, give, and invite. I showed them in the Bible why they should. It sunk in for a few but never for the majority.

My approach was lacking in two ways.

1. No Incentive

I didn’t give them an incentive. Sure, I told them what God asked them to do––their duties. But I wasn’t emphasizing what God offered in return––true joy and abundant life!

By neglecting their Christian duties, they were robbing themselves of the joyful life God intended them to live. People need incentives––even when it comes to spiritual matters.

2. Limited Exposure

I only had them on Sunday mornings. And not even every Sunday morning.

The people that needed to learn the basics rarely came to mid-week services or discipleship classes. It was a catch 22! They needed to understand church participation was important, but they could only learn that if they came to church!

Even if I covered the basics on Sunday morning, I’d never get through to all my members. They’d miss a Sunday, they’d serve in nursery, they’d go on vacation.

I needed a crash course––a focused way to teach all my members the path to joy, to full, active participation in their local church.

But I couldn’t find the right one.

I Created My Own

So I wrote Seven Steps to Joy. And, with (a lot of) editing help from my wife Gloria, I finally had a discipleship course I knew every Christian needed.

Now my church would fully understand what God expected of them and the true joy they could expect in return. The promise of joy gave them a clear incentive to get involved.

To make sure everyone was exposed to this course, we offered Seven Steps to Joy to the whole church and made it a mandatory part of our new members classes.

I was shocked and humbled by the success of this little booklet.

Soon, my pastor friends were asking for copies. Before I knew it, I was printing Seven Steps to Joy by the thousands.

Since then, over 450,000 people have learned the Seven Steps. And every year, 15,000 more people go through this Bible study.

I still take people through Seven Steps to Joy, and I can’t tell you how often I hear them say, “I never knew that before!” In many cases, these people have sat in other churches for years. Yet somehow they never learned the basics.

Its Strength Lies In Its Simplicity

Is this booklet the most profound Bible study available? No, probably not. To you and me it may seem a little simplistic. But it’s not meant for you and me.

Seven Steps to Joy is basic, to-the-point, and practical on purpose. It’s exactly the kind of simple nourishment that a young Christian can digest.

I wasn’t trying to break new ground when I wrote Seven Steps to Joy. I wasn’t trying to make the cover of Christianity Today. I needed a discipleship tool and I created one. I really think that’s why it works so well: it’s a tool for pastors on the front lines written by a pastor on the front lines.

Decades on, it still works.

Help your people understand that becoming active, engaged church members is their path to true joy. Try Seven Steps to Joy today. We’ll send you a free copy, yours to keep, so you can look it over and see if it’s right for your church.

Thanks you for your time,
